NOTE: Currently the Master Developer program is only available to EducateONE intern volunteer developers. We plan to open this up to the public in the future after achieving DEAC accreditation.
The Master Developer program is designed to have qualified software developers learn at a postgraduate level an expertise in software engineering, based upon the O*NET competencies for Software Developers and Computer Programmers, with an emphasis on agile development and AI-supported coding.
FAQ
What is EducateONE?
EducateONE is a startup social venture developing a “pre-school to Ph.D.” education system from the ground up, currently we offer secondary education through Global SchoolONE and offer internal postgraduate education for those who are volunteers and/or contractors.
What is UniversityONE?
UniversityONE is the tertiary (post-secondary) portion of EducateONE, where programs are structured around mastery learning. Currently these programs are only internal to our volunteers and/or contractors.
What is the Master Developer program?
A post-graduate learning program designed to help interns become full software engineers through mentorship and demonstrated mastery of defined competencies.
Is the Master Developer program a Master’s degree?
Not currently. The program is not yet accredited as a Master’s degree, though EducateONE is pursuing accreditation through DEAC so it can be formally recognized as such.
What is the specific opportunity being discussed?
A single internship slot for a developer focused on a specific open source software platform (examples: Odoo, MediaWiki, etc.), including:
- System administration of the platform installation
- Development of integrations and/or extensions for the platform
What are the expected responsibilities?
Responsibilities depend on the chosen platform, but typically include:
- Administering and maintaining the platform (setup, configuration, updates, access/roles, monitoring)
- Implementing integrations with other tools/services (APIs, automation, data sync)
- Developing or customizing platform features (modules, plugins, extensions, workflows)
What is the expected time commitment?
Time commitment is variable, with an expectation to attend:
- Two standup meetings per week
- One mentorship meeting per week
How long does the program last?
Duration is variable and based on mastery learning:
- Participants “graduate” when they demonstrate mastery of required competencies for the relevant learning stack.
How are competencies determined?
Competencies are based on research into what industry needs—specifically:
- O*NET job research (U.S.-focused, because of its depth and rigor)
- Agile development using the Flow of Play methodology, as well as learning Scrum, Kanban, etc.
- EducateONE also emphasizes AI, even where O*NET may not yet fully reflect it
What skills are desired?
Skills vary by platform, but generally include:
- General working knowledge of the chosen open source platform (how it’s used and administered)
- Relevant programming experience aligned with that platform’s ecosystem (e.g., common languages/frameworks used to extend it)
- Basic understanding of the platform’s database and data model (often SQL-based), plus how the platform stores and retrieves data
Is this a paid internship?
No. There is:
- No financial compensation
- No cost to the intern This is framed as an equal trade of time: interns support EducateONE’s needs, and EducateONE provides mentorship toward certification/degree.
Is there any possibility of future paid work?
Possibly, but not guaranteed.
- As the organization grows and interns demonstrate skills beyond intern level, EducateONE will try to compensate specific projects where possible.
What does “graduation” mean in concrete terms?
Competencies must be demonstrated, but:
- There are not fully fixed, universal deliverables described yet
- Demonstration methods can vary depending on the competency
Is there a documented pathway from graduation to formal recognition outside EducateONE?
There is a strategy to pursue accreditation so the credential could become a recognized Master’s degree, but:
- There are no guarantees of accreditation or external recognition.
Is there a documented pathway from graduation to paid project work?
There are strategies intended to lead to paid work, but:
- There are no guarantees of paid projects after graduation.
How competitive is the selection?
It is competitive:
- Multiple candidates may be contacted
- There may be limited slots available for a given open source platform track
